Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 others were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.
The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property near the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Two individuals were arrested at the site and another man who fled following the blast was located soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene displayed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.
The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the residence was facing an eviction order due to debts incurred by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings set off the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander stated to news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the interior minister stated.
The wounded by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.
He was convinced the explosion had taken place on a level above the access point and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being activated”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told local news, adding that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
